International Psilocybin Symposium: Therapeutic potentials, culture and decolonization

The objective of this symposium is to promote a dialogue and reflection on the ritual, therapeutic, scientific, cultural, and philosophical aspects of sacred mushrooms and psilocybin. We are currently facing a global boom of psilocybin and mushrooms in scientific research and, along with it, enormous challenges around globalization, commercialization, and medicalization. Chacruna, accompanied by other Mexican grass roots and non-profit organizations—Via Synapsis, Sociedad Mexicana de Psilocibina, and Mindsurf—have joined forces to bring together researchers, Indigenous scholars, activists, community members, spiritual leaders, and artists from around the globe to discuss these issues from a decolonial standpoint. While efforts to decriminalize mushrooms and psilocybin have picked up in places such as Denver, Oakland, and Oregon, and companies such as Compass and Usona advance commercialization of psilocybin on a large scale, along with new startups joining the dispute in Canada, we ask: Where are the voices of the Global South and Indigenous leaders? How can we create public policies that combine harm reduction, cognitive liberty, and Indigenous rights? At the same time, more discussion is needed in Mexico itself; while mainstream society still largely ignores the deep Indigenous and psychedelic roots of its nation, the Mexican psychedelic community seems to be only starting to grasp the potential impacts of the psychedelic renaissance on its own territory and people. In Mexico, spiritual uses of sacred plants for Indigenous peoples have been legally recognized since 1971; currently, there are some initiatives in the parliament to decriminalize their use for non-Indigenous peoples at the federal level that have hardly been publicly addressed. The topics of this timely symposium include: the history of uses of mushrooms; traditional Indigenous knowledge, healing, and spirituality; therapeutic potentials; conservation; decolonization; biopiracy; intellectual property; and psychedelic capitalism.

Anja Loizaga-Velder
Anja Loizaga-Velder is a German-Mexican clinical psychologist and psychotherapist with humanistic orientation. She earned a doctoral degree in Medical Psychology from Heidelberg University and has published several research articles and book chapters that explore the therapeutic potential of ayahuasca and other psychedelics for the treatment of mental health challenges. She is founding member and director of research and clinical services at the Nierika Institute for Intercultural Medicine, in Mexico, a NGO dedicated to the preservation of indigenous traditions with sacred plant medicines and their research around therapeutic applications for mental health. Anja also is adjunct profesor and researcher in Humanities in Health at the Medical School at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where she works towards implementing clinical research into evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of psychedelics in intercultural therapeutic settings.

Antonella Fagetti
Antonella Fagetti holds a PhD in Anthropology (ENAH) and is a member of the National System of Researchers (level II). She is a research professor in the Sociocultural Anthropology Masters Program at the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities at BUAP (Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla). She has published books, chapters and articles on traditional medicine, shamanism and the ritual use of sacred plants among Indigenous groups, the result of several CONACYT projects that she has developed since 2004.She is currently the group technical manager of the CONACYT Frontier Science project: “Dialogue of knowledge around the therapeutic potential of psilocybin-containing mushrooms. A transdisciplinary study via neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, history and Indigenous traditional knowledge”.

Claudia Cuentas (MA. SEP. MFTI) is a Peruvian musician, singer songwriter, family therapist, researcher and educator, specializing in the art of healing trauma, trauma resolution, cultural identity and decolonization of healing. She is trained in Drama Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, Somatic Experiencing and Trauma informed Care. She also has extensive studies in Indigenous ways of healing, from her native Aymara and Quechua lineages. Claudia has completed parts A and B of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) MDMA Therapy Training Program. Estudia arquitectura y artes visuales en la Universidad Javeriana y en la universidad Nacional de Colombia, hace parte de la primera generación del programa educativo de SOMA, México participa además en seminarios, residencias artísticas, entre otros. Cuenta con una amplia trayectoria, de quince años de producción constante, exhibiendo su trabajo en mas de sesenta exposiciones, además de curadurías en diferentes instituciones internacionales, museos, galerías, centros culturales y espacios autogestivos. Cómo el Salón Nacional de Artistas en Colombia en 2010, Exteresa Arte Actual 2011, Arte Ocupa Brasil 2013, Experiencia No 1 Rosario Argentina en 2014, MAZ Museo de Arte de Zapopan, Jalisco en 2015. Galeria, Angels Barcelona, cierre de la residencia BAR Project SOMA 2016, Residencia Art project en Playa del carmen, y Residencia virtual en Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Arafura, entre otros espacios y proyectos. Actualmente co-dirige el espacio La Pared arte contemporáneo entre México y Colombia.
Su línea de investigación se ha desarrollado en una preocupación por el deseo, y una revisión crítica constante hacia el consumo y el valor en la sociedad contemporánea, desde la producción de residuos. Desde hace algunos años desarrolla el proyecto Pharmakon, una investigación sobre la farmacia y la autosuficiencia medicinal y alimentaria centrada ahora en la etnobotánica, su producción se ha enfocado en la precariedad y las posibilidades de subsistencia, desde los simple y el cuidado, a partir de la relación no antropocentrica con las plantas y los otros seres con los que compartmos la existencia.

Heriberto Prado Pereda nació en Santa María de Chichotla, en el municipio de Teotitlán de Flores Magón (antes Teotitlán del Camino), Oaxaca, en 1954. Fue sacerdote católico durante doce años; durante aquél tiempo, tradujo la misa al mazateco: kuyNndjale naina nga en na/Cantemos a Dios en nuestra lengua (mazateca) (México, D.F.: ed. Priv., 1986). Desde 1997 se desempeña como investigador independiente. En los años 1992-1993 y 1996-1997 fue becario del Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes para Escritores en Lenguas Indígenas. Como resultado, preparó varios tomos de cantos tradicionales y composiciones originales aún inéditos, entre ellos, “Cantos en torno al tiempo santificado indio” (1996). Actualmente, está al frente de una coalición de pueblos indígenas cuya tarea principal es el rescate del patrimonio cultural mazateco, particularmente en el campo religioso cultural. Su obra retoma el gran aliento religioso de los curanderos y sacerdotes tradicionales mazatecos.

Ibrahim Gabriell is a communicologist and multidisciplinary researcher of the phenomenon of expanded states of consciousness. As a professor in the state of Chiapas (Mexico), he has taught both Communication studies at the Universidad de los Altos de Chiapas and Transpersonal Psychology at the Universidad Jose Vasconcelos. He is Communications and Editorial Associate of Chacruna Latinoamérica in Mexico. He is also co-founder of Vía Synapsis, an academic society that organizes the National Congress on Psychoactive Substances at the National University of Mexico. Jesús M. González Mariscal
Jesús M. González Mariscal es Licenciado en Psicología por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, España; Maestro en Antropología por la Universidad de las Américas-Puebla, México; y Doctor en Sociología ad honorem por la Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, México, dentro del programa de becas del Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología. Es investigador de la medicina tradicional indígena americana y sus aplicaciones al ámbito de la psicoterapia. Es especializado en el ámbito del chamanismo y la construcción de modelos de intervención terapéutica basados en la articulación de medicinas. Trabajó como Psicólogo Clínico en “Takiwasi, Centro de Rehabilitación de Toxicómanos y de Investigación de Medicinas Tradicionales”, desempeñando la función de Coordinador Terapéutico del 2013 al 2016. Fue fundador y director de “Tsayal, Comunidad Terapéutica para Adolescentes” en Quintana Roo, así como fundador y coordinador de “La Mimbrera, Colectivo transdisciplinario de investigación social”. Ha impartido numerosas conferencias, ponencias, talleres y seminarios en España y México. Es autor de textos para revistas científicas y libros. Actualmente dedica su práctica profesional a la atención psicoterapéutica privada en la CdMx y la coordinación del proyecto de investigación “Diálogo de saberes en torno a las potencialidades terapéuticas de los hongos que contienen psilocibina”, financiado por el Conacyt bajo la convocatoria “Ciencia de frontera 2019”.
