The Church of the Eagle and the Condor
The Church of the Eagle and the Condor is a spiritual community based in Arizona. With the support Chacruna’s fiscal sponsorship, we raised almost $50,000 to pay the CEC’s out-of-pocket costs to sue the federal government for the legal right to use our sacrament Ayahuasca. In 2020, a shipment of ayahuasca was confiscated and destroyed by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. We filed suit in 2021 with a legal team of five lawyers, resulting in a favorable settlement with the U.S. government. In 2024, we received permits from the Drug Enforcement Administration to allow us to import and use ayahuasca in our ceremonial setting–breaking a 15-year stalemate with the government over the religious right to use ayahuasca. Chacruna was directly involved with our fundraising and was a co-requester in our attempts to access ayahuasca-related documents from the federal government through the Freedom of Information Act.
